Piragua Overview

Piraguas are large boats often built from dugout trunks of massive trees. It can also refer to boats crafted from lashing smaller trees into banana-shaped vessels. Typically used for fishing and transport their primary purpose was not meant for combat. When pressed into combat they serve as fast-moving platforms for warriors to attack enemies with small arms weapons like bows and muskets. A step up from a Canoa, they often have one or two masts with square sails. Piraguas were used throughout the Caribbean to assault Sloops and small naval vessels or conduct quick land raids.

The Piragua is a new class of vessel called a boat. Boats have a base half the size of a standard ship. This smaller base naturally makes them harder to hit and more maneuverable. To reflect the Piragua’s fragility it has fewer Fatigue and Damage tracks than a standard ship (5 each, rather than the standard 7). Due to its simplistic design, the ship cannot be upgraded with any ship upgrade cards or enhancements. Built for hugging the coast, with only a few inches below the surface of the water, these ships have a new ability of No Draft that allows them to sail over a Shoal without penalty.

Pros

  • Inexpensive
  • Quick and maneuverable
  • Since you don’t have Broadside you can use your Crew Actions to Row with Sweeps almost every round
  • Excellent for swarming tactics
  • Great for distractions or corraling your opponent’s movement
  • Having Yare and No Draft allow this ship to maneuver places other ships can’t.
  • Because of its speed and maneuverability, it is good for chasing objective tokens solo (e.g. Spy or Raid Mission)
  • A good low-cost way to increase the strike points available to your fleet

Cons

  • Fragile. They have only 5 Fatigue and 5 Damage tracks meaning they are easily destroyed in only 1 broadside.
  • They are incapable of inflicting actual damage on enemy ships.
  • Cannot make Broadside attacks
  • Only 2 Dice for Partial Attack and Close Combat
  • They cannot take Ship Upgrade Cards
