The Canoa is one of the foundational boats used by the Natives faction. It is lightweight and fragile, but inexpensive and can be taken in great numbers.

Historical Background

“The canoa has been called “Neptune’s Seahorse” and is a small, swift vessel used for short trips and trade. The most common boat in North America, it is often used for coastal trips and raids by Native Americans and Buccaneers alike.”
– Firelock Games Blood & Plunder Canoa

You can read more about the Canoa as it exists in Blood & Plunder on BloodandPigment.com’s Canoa review on the ship or their YouTube review to see how it compares.

Canoa Overview

The Canoe is one of the oldest known boat types in history. Artifacts from excavations date back to 4000 B.C. Initially meant simply for travel or fishing, this boat was not meant for combat. Long and narrow, it is extremely unstable. In the rigors of combat, it could be easily swamped or tip and spill its passengers.

The Canoa is a new class of vessel called a boat. Boats have a base half the size of a standard ship. This smaller base naturally makes them harder to hit and more maneuverable. To reflect the Canoa fragility it has fewer Fatigue and Damage tracks than a standard ship (4 each, rather than the standard 7). Due to its simplistic design, the ship cannot be upgraded with any ship upgrade cards or enhancements. Built for hugging the coast, with only a few inches below the surface of the water, these ships have a new ability of No Draft that allows them to sail over a Shoal without penalty.

Pros

  • Inexpensive
  • Quick and maneuverable
  • Paddles allows you to ignore all penalties from wind and even move directly In the Wind’s Eye
  • Low Profile keeps you from getting hit as easily by larger ships
  • Excellent for swarming tactics
  • Great for distractions or corraling your opponent’s movement
  • Having Yare and No Draft allow this ship to maneuver places other ships can’t.
  • Because of its speed and maneuverability, it is good for chasing objective tokens solo (e.g. Spy or Raid Mission)
  • A good low-cost way to increase the strike points available to your fleet

Cons

  • Fragile. They have only 4 Fatigue and 4 Damage tracks meaning they are easily destroyed in only 1 broadside.
  • The Paddles ability denies you the positive bonuses of wind effects
  • Unstable ability makes them susceptible to additional damage
  • They are incapable of inflicting actual damage on enemy ships.
  • Cannot make Broadside attacks
  • Only 1 Die for Partial Attack and Close Combat
  • They cannot take Ship Upgrade Cards
