Revenge: Ultimate Oak & Iron Pirate Ship Guide

Oak & Iron ship stat card - Revenge

Historical Background

The Revenge is a sloop commissioned by “The Gentleman Pirate”, Stede Bonnet in the spring of 1717. It was a sixty-ton sloop equipped with 10 guns. Stede was a wealthy aristocrat who had almost no knowledge of life at sea other than the allure of the stories of piracy he’d heard. Despite that, he hired a crew and raided a number of ships in the Americas and Barbados region. He sailed for Nasaus in Sept of 1717 and engaged with a Spanish warship. His ship damaged, half his crew wounded or killed, and having been wounded himself, Stede and the Revenge limped to Nasua to repair, restock and replenish the crew.

While in Nasua, Captain Bonnet met the infamous Captain Blackbeard and Captain Benjamin Hornigold. While recovering from his wounds Bonnet turned command of his ship over to Blackbeard. Two months later they captured the French slave ship, La Concorde, which was renamed, “The Queen Anne’s Revenge” and became Blackbeard’s flagship. Stede engaged in nearly a year of successful pirating until being captured and hung for his crimes.

Revenge Ship Overview & Tactics

The Revenge is essentially the same as a standard sloop upgraded with Additional Guns and Additional Crew for 3 points instead of 4. This makes it more capable in a fight. Equipped with an additional jib and op sail the vessel also gains the Fast upgrade essentially for free. It is hard not to add this ship to any Pirate faction squadron, particularly in lower-point games.

If you are a particularly bold captain, you could consider converting the Revenge into a Fire Ship. With its Fast ability, you can close with your opponent’s largest ship and inflict a massive 10-dice Critical Hit strike — almost guaranteeing you will cripple the target.

Pros

  • Fast and manueverable
  • Inexpensive
  • Great for swarming tactics
  • Excellent for distractions or corraling your opponent’s movement
  • Well paired with the Fire Ship ship upgrade
  • A good way to increase the strike points available to your fleet

Cons

  • Fragile. Against Ships of the Line, it can be destroyed in only 1-2 broadsides.
  • Low ranged firepower
  • Low close combat ability
  • Easy targets to inflict Strike Points
