Historical Background

LIght Galleon miniature

Galleons were an evolution of the carrack. The fore-castle and cabins were lowered and streamlined. Their stern was changed from rounded to square-tucked. Reduced from Carrack’s 1,000-ton average, most were in the 500-ton displacement range. Galleons were deepwater sailing vessels that generally fit with three or more masts, often with a lateen fore-and-aft rig on the rear masts. Their fore and main masts were square-rigged sail plans and many had spritsails or sprit-topsails to gain as much speed as possible. Even though their primary design purpose was to serve as cargo vessels their hulls often had multiple decks of cannons for protection. When pressed into military service they added additional or larger cannons. The galleon was so versatile and well-designed it served as the prototype of all square-rigged ships with three or more masts for over 250 years.

Light Galleon Overview

This ship is the largest and most powerful ship available in the Core Rules boxed set.

Pros

  • With a 3 Fortitude, this ship is the most durable of the starter ships. even with the expansions, it rivals many of the larger ships all the way up to a 3rd Rate. They are very hard to sink in 50 pt games and still solid choices in 100 pt games
  • It is a jack-of-all-trades ship that spans the gap between small and large ships.
  • In games 100 points and under, this is likely to be one of the biggest ships on the board.

Cons

  • The ship is the most expensive ship in the starter box.
  • When sailing Weatherly the ship stalls out with a speed of 1.
  • It only has a single integrated ability and you have to pay for all other upgrades.
  • In 200 point games, they are still good options but don’t hold up as well as a 3rd or 4th Rate.
