Plunder! – An Oak & Iron Scenario

Shipwreck of San Felipe by Gordon Miller
excerpt from “Wreck of the San-Felipe” painting by Gordon Miller

A Spanish treasure fleet was caught in a torrential storm last night, during which several ships were lost. But rumors of a sighting of one galleon dashed upon the rocks and run aground in the nearby shoals have spread like wildfire. Crews from around the region have set out to be the first to recover what treasure may still lie above the water’s surface. Form up your fleet and seek the Spanish prize in the “Plunder!” scenario.

This is a custom scenario designed for the Oak & Iron miniatures game based on the “9-10 Plunder!” scenario from No Peace Beyond the Line” for Blood & Plunder.

Plunder! Scenario for Oak & Iron

GAME SETUP:

Do not use the normal game cards to set up the game, instead use the following.

  • Use a standard 3’x3’ or larger game board
  • Players may select their initiative cards as per the normal rules.
  • Select the Rocks and Fog terrain pieces that are shown in Figure 1 & 2. In this scenario, the Fog will represent a large area of Shoal terrain rather than standard fog.
  • Place the Shoal (fog) terrain piece on the centerline of the board and within Cannon distance of the edge of the board opposite the player’s deployment zones.
  • Place the Rock terrain piece at the center of the Shoal.
  • If you have a shipwreck terrain piece or want to use the token provided in this scenario you may add them to the board as well.
  • Place two objective markers on the Rock terrain or Shipwreck presenting a Prize.

SCENARIO RULES:

  • Each of the 2 Prizes (objective marker) is up for capture by a ship that ends its movement, with a Speed of 2 or less, within Yard Arm range of the marker.
  • A single ship may only carry a single Prize at a time.
  • Prizes aboard a ship that sinks are out of the game and no longer recoverable.
  • If two enemy ships are Entangled with each other, a vessel may use a Crew Action to attempt Skill Test to steal the Prize and move it to its vessel. If the target ship with Prize is currently Shaken, the Skill Test automatically succeeds.
  • You may transfer a Prize between two Entangled friendly ships with a Crew Action.

DEPLOYMENT:

  • Determine the Attacker and Defender by standard rules.
  • Players deploy in opposite corners of one shared side of the board (red and blue areas in Figure 3).
  • Ships should be fully within cannon range distance of both edges of the board and further than Cannon range from an enemy ship.

GAME LENGTH:

10 Turns

OBJECTIVES:

  • Players gain Strike Points as normal
  • The Attacker and Defender each gain a Strike Point at the end of Turn 6 (and later) if no ship has one of the prizes.
  • At the end of each round, a Prize on a player’s ship inflicts 1 Strike Point against its opponent for losing the prize.
  • If a player deliberately destroys a Prize, they automatically lose the Plunder! scenario.
  • A ship that has a Prize on board and successfully sails off any edge of the board has successfully escaped. If the ship is Crippled, it still counts as 1 Strike Point. Opponents still suffer a Strike Point for losing each Prize when checking for withdrawal in the End Phase.

FORCES:

For this scenario, players may use any agreed-upon force size. In addition, keep in mind that you are sailing upwind, so faster and more weatherly ships have an advantage.
